With Vista just out the door, Microsoft is now drawing up plans to deliver its follow-up client operating system by the end of 2009, according to the executive in charge of building the product's core components.

That would be a much faster turn-around than Vista, which shipped more than five years after Windows XP, but Vista was exceptional, said Ben Fathi, corporate vice president of development with Microsoft's Windows Core Operating System Division this week at the RSA Conference in San Francisco.

Microsoft originally planned for its XP follow-up to conține a number of radical changes to Windows, including a new file system and a reinvented user interface, but after the company's products were hit by widespread worm outbreaks in 2003, Microsoft redirected almost its entire engineering effort to locking down Windows with the XP Service Pack 2 release.

"We put Longhorn on the back burner for awhile," Fathi said. "Then when we came back to it, we realized that there were incremental things that we wanted to do, and significant improvements that we wanted to make in Vista that we couldn't deliver in one release."

Vista shipped about two-and-a-half years after XP SP 2, and Vista's follow-up is expected to take about the same amount of time, according to Fathi. "You can think roughly two, two-and-a-half years is a reasonable time frame that our partners can depend on and can work with," he said. "That's a good timeframe for refresh."

That time line would put Microsoft's next client operating system out by the end of 2009.

Last year, Microsoft said that the code name for this Vista follow-up is Vienna, but Fathi said he could not disclose the current name. "We've been told not to use it publicly," he said.

So what will be the coolest new feature in Vienna?

According to Fathi, that's still being worked out. "We're going to look at a fundamental piece of enabling technology. Maybe its hypervisors, I don't know what it is," he said. "Maybe it's a new user interface paradigm for consumers."

"It's too early for me to talk about it," he added. "But over the next few months I think you're going to start hearing more and more."

Windows Vienna, cunoscut in trecut sub numele de cod Blackcomb, reprezinta un viitor sistem de operare Microsoft, anuntat in februarie 2000. De atunci, a fost subiectul unor aminari si reprogramari majore, pe modelul Windows Vista. Din aceasta luna, numele pe care angajatii Microsoft il folosesc intern pentru viitorul sistem de operare este secret si nu a fost întrebuințat in public niciodata.

Ben Fathi, vicepresedinte al Diviziei Sisteme de Operare din cadrul Microsoft, sustine, citat de publicatia electronica Trusted Reviews, ca ne putem astepta sa vedem Windows Vienna lansat pina in vara anului 2009.

„Cred ca se poate spune ca doi ani, doi ani si jumatate inseamna o perioada rezonabila de timp pe care partenerii nostri se pot baza“, a declarat Fathi.

Acesta a mai precizat ca distanta monstruoasa de cinci ani dintre Windows XP si Windows Vista a schimbat, de asemenea, strategia Microsoft pentru producerea sistemelor de operare.

„Ne-am dat seama ca au existat lucruri tare bune pe care am dorit sa le facem si imbunatatiri semnificative pe care am vrut sa le includem in Vista, dar pe care nu le-am putut livra intr-o singura lansare“, a declarat Fathi, explicind ca ar putea avea loc, in viitor, o inclinare catre un sistem de operare mai asemanator cu cele scoase de Apple.

Ben Fathi a refuzat sa dea detalii despre ceea ce va cuprinde urmatorul sistem de operare care va fi lansat de Microsoft.

Numele de cod Blackcomb a fost desemnat, initial, unei versiuni de Windows care trebuia sa urmeze Windows XP (cunoscut drept Whistler, ambele fiind numite dupa statiunea Whistler-Blackcomb) in varianta client si server. Cu toate acestea, in august 2001, lansarea Blackcomb a fost aminata cu citiva ani si Vista (denumit initial Longhorn dupa numele unui bar din statiunea montana Whistler-Blackcomb) a fost anuntat ca versiune intermediara XP si Blackcomb. De atunci, s-a vorbit mult despre Blackcomb si au aparut numeroase zvonuri, de la anularea lansarii pina la doar o varianta server. In 2006 s-a aflat ca exista in planuri in continuare, in varianta client si server.

Windows Vienna - two and a half years from now

Now that Vista is on the shelves, Microsoft is focusing on its next major operating system release, Windows Vienna. Even though Windows Vienna is going to be a major release with a totally revised GUI, Microsoft made a bold statement: by the end of 2009 Vienna will hit the shelves.
However, Microsoft needs to keep the buzz on Windows Vista for now and so they are not releasing any Windows Vienna official information to the public yet, expect for the fact that they are working on it.

In the past 20 years, the Microsoft Windows operating system has accumulated old code libraries that brought it to the size it has today, 2.5 GB and about 50 million lines of code (Windows Vista). These old code libraries consume resources and are often the targets of security exploits. The best way to avoid such problems, is to start from scratch, which is close to what Microsoft plans to do with Windows Vienna. Windows Vienna will represent the start of a different generation of operating systems, bringing in new concepts and support for new types of hardware, along with a better security and a modular approach, which will allow future versions of Windows to be built more easily on Windows Vienna's engine.
It is also likely that the future success of Microsoft's products will be strongly decided by the success of the new generation operating system.

Windows Fiji, then Windows Vienna

Windows codename Fiji, or Vista R2 is now scheduled to deliver before Windows Vienna. Windows Fiji is planned to be released in 2008, while Windows Vienna had its estimated release date in 2010. Due to the recent Windows Vista delay the domino effect could cause these other two versions of Windows to also be delayed, however the schedule disruption will not be significant.

Why the name change?

Many were wondering why Microsoft decided to change the codename of the future version of Windows from Blackcomb to Vienna. Bruce Morgan from Microsoft, expresses his personal opinion:
"Blackcomb was the code name for some other project driven by other people, started many years ago. The people who chose that name and started that have moved around quite a bit since then, and different people have the leadership roles now. The vision for the product is quite a bit different, I'd imagine, than in the late 90s. So many things are different now that it's been many years since Blackcomb was the "next version of Windows after Whistler."

"These code names are derived from cities/locations in the world known for great 'vistas'. The kinds of places we all want to see, experience and that capture the imagination. Vienna fits with this concept."

NeoWin.com writes about how Windows Blackcomb changed its name to Windows Vienna. Windows Vienna (formerly Blackcomb) is the successor of the Windows Vista operating system. The new codename was not officially confirmed by Microsoft, however Robert Scoble confirmed the rumour in a Channel9 topic.
